Bible Verses for Loneliness

Loneliness is one of the quietest griefs. You can be in a crowded room and feel it. You can be married and feel it. The Bible takes loneliness seriously — God's first recorded "not good" was about it. These twelve passages are for the seasons when you feel unseen.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid, nor be scared of them; for Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.

He will not fail you nor forsake you. Whatever absence you are feeling from people, this absence is not God's.

Psalm 139:7-10

Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there! If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

There is no place where He is not. The loneliness you feel is real, but the aloneness it whispers about is not.

Hebrews 13:5

Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, I will in no way leave you, nor in any way forsake you.

Said twice in Hebrews for emphasis. Will not leave you. Will not forsake you.

Matthew 28:20

Teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

Jesus' final words before ascending. Always — including the moments when always is hard to feel.

Psalm 27:10

When my father and my mother forsake me, then Yahweh will take me up.

Even the closest human ties can fail. God's hold does not.

John 14:18

I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you.

Jesus said this to disciples about to lose Him. He does not leave us in orphan-status — He comes.

Isaiah 41:10

Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

I am with you is the first thing He says. Everything else flows from that.

Psalm 23:4

Yes, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

The shift in the Psalm from He to You happens in the valley. Loneliness can become intimacy with Him in the dark.

Genesis 2:18

Yahweh God said, It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper comparable to him.

God Himself names that aloneness is not good. He designed you for connection. If you are lonely, He is not asking you to pretend you are fine.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and does not have another to lift him up.

Look around. Even one person you can be honest with is a treasure. If you do not have one, ask God for one — and look at your church.

Romans 8:38-39

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God's love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

There is nothing that can put distance between you and His love. Nothing.

Psalm 34:18

Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

Loneliness often comes with a broken heart. He is near to that.

A prayer

Father, You see me when no one else does. You know the moments today when I felt invisible. Thank You that You have promised never to leave me. Show me the people You have placed in my life that I have overlooked. And in the quiet moments, be enough. Amen.
